How Can You Relax at a Time Like This?
Now more than ever ... I know your mind is reeling from the pandemic, the lockdown, the financial crash, and your heart is breaking from the weight of loss, grief, outrage and injustice at the racist violence still so pervasive in our so-called civilized world. Your soul is on fire with fierce love, deep desire for a better world, and your body is weary and wired for action all at once. If you're anything like me.
I'm holding you in my mind and my heart, in the breath of my body and the prayers of my spirit. I'm holding tight to my practice of letting go. I'm grieving and celebrating too. I'm celebrating you - you've made it to this day, and there is hope arising, change happening, healing beginning again, even now. And I'm reminding you that it's time to relax.
It's not a silly time to relax - it's absolutely imperative! Without a strong foundation of wellness, without a peaceful spirit, without our command central of clear mind and open heart to guide us and to be guided by Divine Intelligence and intuition, we cannot do what needs to be done.
This is how we make it happen. Activating our natural genius, talent, creativity and compassion require a clearing away of tension, confusion, exhaustion, fear and distraction - again and again. It all begins with relaxing - we cannot skip this crucial step. We must come back to it every day, many times a day, make it our way of life, or we will be overtaken by anxiety, pain, anger and hopelessness.
We cannot afford to neglect this vital and vitally important practice. If you don't know how, you can begin to learn today. If you're an experienced practitioner, come back to basics with me and rejuvenate your practice. If yours is a solitary practice, join us for good company on the journey.
We're all in this together, I remind you once again, lest we forget how intimately interconnected our wellbeing really is. None of us is truly safe until we are all safe. None is free until all are free. And justice at all must be justice for all.
In this moment, I rise up and stand with Black Lives Matter and the African-American community because they have collectively stepped forward into leadership of the movement for dignity and democracy in swift and powerful response to recent and ongoing atrocities against them, culminating in the brutal police murder of George Floyd.
Whether it's been with Migrant Justice here in Vermont, Standing Rock, the Women's March, 350.org, or even going back a few decades, opposing the Iraq War - each time I stand with those who will step forward and lead our nation forward, each in their turn, our turn. Whether leading a small group, joining a crowd of thousands or answering the hotline when one person calls, I show up as best I can in each moment, knowing I can always do better, and welcoming encouragement and accountability to do so.
In this moment, I know I can be here for you, in this humble way. Many are raising their voices, making demands, creating new systems that will serve the whole community equally, calling out those in power who are neglecting their responsibilities and failing to lead. I have, at this time, a quieter calling, primarily, though this work is not all I do. Learn 2 Relax is my unique offering for this unique chapter in history, inspired by the shock wrought by the coronavirus and unfolding now through the collective transformation wrought by the strength and bravery of the Black Lives Matter movement, all communities of color and their allies.
I am here for you, whoever you are, as a humbly devoted white ally, as a Reiki Master Teacher dedicated to supporting the healing and wellbeing of all who will awaken to their own beautiful, incredible power, and as a mother of a son of the next generation who will carry on the work that we have carried on from those who struggled and celebrated before us.
I'm tired of being used by the white supremacist establishment as a shield for their destructive agendas by calmly presenting a reasonable, caring, progressive face to the world without boldly challenging that conditioning and risking the ruffling of feathers and the stepping on of toes in the white circles around me. If I'm not feeling nervous about the stand I'm taking, then I'm probably not standing in the right place, in the place where I can do the most good by pushing the comfort zones of myself and those who are like me.
I will not depart from my commitments to compassion, gratitude, graciousness, kindness, and - this should be obvious - nonviolence. But that doesn't mean I promise not to push any buttons or create any disturbances in the course of living the Reiki principles I chant and reaffirm every day: I refrain from succumbing to anger and worry, I diligently cultivate compassion and gratitude, and I embody my work and purpose, to serve and prosper in love through inner and outer work, every day, all day long, and often well into the night.
You are my tribe, my family, my brothers and sisters, and you are welcome in my sanctuary. I will protect you with fierce love, nurture you and exhort you to deeper self-care, model for you what I teach in my own unceasing and unperfect unfolding practice. I love indulging in sharing my passion for what brings me joy and uplifts the people in my life. Indulge with me. Life is hard enough already. Let's Learn 2 Relax, together.
